Hypnotherapy is a therapy that combines psychological methods to help people make changes or have more control over their condition. It utilises hypnosis along with one or more of the following therapies:
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Neuro-linguistic programming
Talking therapy
Everyone is capable of entering a hypnotic state. Most individuals frequently enter this state without even realising it – for example, when your mind wonders while driving and you suddenly notice that you can’t recall watching the road while driving, or when you’re watching a movie, listening to your favourite music or engaging in your favourite hobby or craft. You’re so focused you don’t notice anything else or time passing.
Hypnosis involves the hypnotherapist guiding you into this relaxed hypnotic state, usually through relaxation and verbal cues. Once you are in this state, the hypnotherapist makes suggestions to support the changes you want. This is followed by the hypnotherapist guiding you back to the present.
Openness to suggestions created by reduced activity between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the medical prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex.
